Oriental Medicine

What does Oriental Medicine Mean?

Gateway ImageOriental Medicine (OM) refers to the ancient and modern practices of East Asian medicine that incorporate Acupuncture, Herbology, Bodywork, Nutrition & Dietary Therapy, Meditation Arts, and Movement therapeutics (such as Qi Gong and T’ai Chi.) It is also sometimes called TCM—Traditional Chinese Medicine. The philosophical roots of OM view the body, mind and spirit as interpenetrating realities of existence that affect the vitality and flow of one’s life force, known as Qi (pronounced “chee”). The healing practices of OM are administered by skillful practitioners to harness and balance this energy within the body, bringing it to areas of weakness and dispersing it from areas where it has become excessive and pathogenic.

Who practices Oriental Medicine?

In Massachusetts, less then 10% of Licensed Acupuncturists are certified in Oriental Medicine. We believe that the OM level of training is integral to the quality of care we can provide, therefore all New Harmony practitioners hold the Diplomate of Oriental Medicine. Diplomates of O.M. are examined by the NCCAOM (National Certification Commission for Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine) and can be recognized by the credential: “Dipl. O.M. (NCCAOM).”
